INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD

   Definition


An interactive whiteboard is a presentation system that connects a computer to a projector and screen. Through the use of either special pens or even fingertips, presenters can manipulate the images on the screen. Many interactive whiteboard companies also sell additional devices that allow the audience to fully participate in the presentation by texting or selecting numbers, which then appear on the board. Interactive whiteboards are used in classrooms, in the business world or anywhere people need to make presentations.

Types Of Interactive Whiteboard
            The whiteboard is a digital device consisting of a large display that is connected to a computer and a projector. This configuration serves as the platform for different software technologies that allow users to interact with the display of the whiteboard. The mode of interaction is what typically differentiates the various types of whiteboards. These devices are gaining popularity in education and are often used across all grade levels and subject areas to create interactive hands-on lessons. Popular manufacturers of different types of whiteboards are SMART Technologies, Numonics, Promethean, TouchIT and Mimio.

Uses Of Interactive Whiteboards In Schools.

       -   Audio/video presentations.

Interactive whiteboards allow teachers to create lessons and lectures that incorporate the different learning styles of their students. For example, an instructor can incorporate streaming video or teach from a slide show that includes large, full-color pictures for students who learn best visually. The teacher can include audio components, such as speeches or music, for those students who learn best by listening. In addition, students who wish to create something more than a poster or essay for an assignment can use the interactive whiteboard to present a multimedia production.

2    -  Built In Software

Many interactive whiteboards come preloaded with software that takes the place of physical classroom materials.This built-in software includes maps, mathematics applications and educational games. For example, instead of using a pull-down world map that often gets stuck and becomes outdated in a few years, an educator can use the colorful, up-to-date maps provided by the interactive whiteboard to teach history or geography. Since many students enjoy the novelty of writing on the board, the educational games allow students to learn, compete and have fun at the same time

Definition Of Information Of Technology

            According to the Oxford Student’s Dictionary of current English for KBSM, information is facts or knowledge given. While technology is state in Macmillan English Dictionary for advanced learners as advanced scientific knowledge used for practical purpose. In other words, technology is advanced machines and equipment developed using technology. Therefore, information technology or well-known as IT is a combination of computer and communication that use to create, store, exchange and use information in many forms. Ethical is involving the principle used for deciding what is right and what is wrong. Most people these days involved in many ethical issues in information technology. It can be good impact or bad impact to the people especially in teenagers.

Factors Of Ethical Issues

            There are many factors of ethical issues in information technology view. It happens when individual influence by his or her friends. It happens when they always together in their works. As we know that, ethical issues could be good or bad. For examples of good point of ethical issues is search information or current issues. Meanwhile, bad is plagiarism, where he or she doing assignment that given by lecturer or teacher by copy and paste from the internet. Sometimes, friends can give benefits but sometimes it can destroy. Sometimes they help us to broaden our knowledge but sometimes we expose to illegal things like negative activities. 

Negative Effect Of Unethical Computer Users.

            Plagiarism is the example of unethical computer users. It is the serious problem in computer ethics because they will give the negative impact to information technology field specially. Actually, plagiarism is that the use of someone else’s intellectual property includes their ideas or written book. As a student, we will get trouble if plagiarize someone else idea. For instance, students that who are detected as plagiarize thrown out of school or colleges. Futhermore, even if the student plagiarism action’s discovered after finish the study, it will influence negatively our degree and damage the career. In addition, it is give negative impact to who are owns the ideas that copied illegally by someone else. For example, they cannot get income that how much they actually should get because their own ideas or work are sold illegally by someone else.

SMART SCHOOL
            Smart school is a Malaysian education system which learning instituition that reconstruct systematically teaching-learning and school management in order to prepared children for Information Age. Smart School had become one of the seven flagship of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) that will carry out in 2000. Early in 1996, the Ministry of Education was created laws of Smart School concept. There was teaching and learning based on creative thinking. Technology as a important component in Smart School concept when Smart School project exist as one of application that are part of Malaysian Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC).
Learning institution of Smart School was created systemically reinverted in term of teaching and learning practice and school management in order to prepare student for Information Age. In the Information Age, a Smart School will evolve over time continuously developing its professional staff, education resources and its administrative capabilities to adapt to changing condition, while continuing to prepare student life. Actually, teaching and learning process were included the process of curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and teaching learning materials in a mutually reinforcing, coherent manner. Smart School management can be manage efficiently and effectively when the primary objective were correlation with the resources and processes that required to support the teaching-learning function. The Smart School management will need strong, professional administrators and teachers who can articulate school goals clearly, lead teaching at the school and elicit strong parental and community support to fulfill its objective.
There are several groups of stakeholders that play important role in order to ensure that the Smart School plan always in a good conditions. There are five stakeholders that are involve as the key success of Smart School which is school stakeholders, community stakeholders, MoE stakeholders, state stakeholders and industry stakeholders. Thus, the most important groups that will helps to achieve the goals and objectives of Smart School which is teachers, students and parents. Teachers, students and parents participation with full commitment are the source and major factor to fulfill the goals and objectives that already been listed in the Malaysian smart school programmed. As we all know there are five goals that have to be fulfill which is provide all around development of the individuals, provide opportunities to enhance individual strength and abilities, increase participation of stakeholders, democratize education and produce a thinking and technology literate workforce.
Teachers are the main source and primary deliver for students to refer in order t get information. The roles that can be played by teachers to accomplish the goals of smart school are they have to well planned and preparation of learning activities so that  the students  enjoy in learning time either inside the classroom or outside of the classroom. For example, teachers can do an internet searching on the topic that will discuss in the next session of teaching. Next teacher should provide additional material that related to the topic so that students have lot of materials to refer not just using textbooks and workbooks. Then, the role that can be played by teachers is by delivering effective instructions so that the students can understand the topic easily. The good communication between teachers and students will allow effective acceptance from the students to the topics. Another role played that teachers can make is by handling professional tasks so that teachers is highly ready to organize programme in order to enhance students knowledge.

reflection


REFLECTION
            First of all, in this semester 1 session 2012/2013, I am taking subject  ICT in Science Education. ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology in Science. Our class was teach by Encik Azmi. He is very kind and tolerance. Through the semester, I learn so many things about ICT, such as the rationale and advantages of ICT applications in Science education. Besides, we also learn about simulation, data logging, interactive whiteboard, blogger and other ICT applications. Purpose of this courses is to create or produce teacher that creative and innovative in create something interesting that want to introduce to students.

            Through this semester, many things that we have learn. Firstly, we have to completely a task of simulation. For this semester, the simulation is to do STELLAR. STELLAR is Sustaining Technology Enhanced Learning at a LARge scale, is an EU project represents the effort of the leading instituitions and project in European Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) to unify our diverse community. This is first time to do experiment by using computer. It was very interesting and more understand. I was doing experiment about predator-prey experiment. This assignment was do an individually.

            In addition, we also have to do data logging. For this assignment, we do in group. Data logging is the process of using a computer to collect data through sensors, analyze the data and save and output the results of the collection and analysis. Data logging also implies the control of how the computer collects and analyzes the data. In data logging, it have 3 important component, which are engage, empower and enhance.

            Finally, the most interesting assignment is do e-portfolio and save in blog. This is first time I create blog. I found, it was very interesting because we can write anything to express our feeling. Besides, in this e-portfolio, we must complete several element which are, philosophy that includes national philosophy, science education philosophy and my teaching philosophy. Then, all assignment, video, picture, reflection, resumes and certificates.

            Lastly, I want to say thank you very much to Encik Azmi that teach me through the semester about ICT. In Sha Allah, I wiil apply what I was learn to my future students and make science subject as easier and interesting subjects.

REPORT CONTENT ANALYSIS PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING (PBL)

1.0       OBJECTIVES

-  To define the terms Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
- To determine the issues in integrating information and communication technology (ICT) in Malaysian schools.
- To discuss the challenges in integrating information and communication technology (ICT) in Malaysian schools.

2.0       INTRODUCTION

Malaysia does aware with the growth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Thus, smart schools have been introduced under Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) project. The government aims to capitalize on the presence of leading-edge technologies and the rapid development of the MSC’s infrastructure to jump start deployment of enabling technology to schools. ICT are defined as a diverse set of technological tools and resources used to communicate, create, disseminate, store and manage information. These technologies include computer, internet, broadcasting technologies and telephony. ICT does great but there are some issues and challenges in integrating ICT in teaching and learning in our Malaysian schools.

4.0       DISCUSSION

The first issue that we choose is the readiness of teachers to use ICT for their lessons. We find the challenge, teacher must be provided with the knowledge and soft skills for using the new digital tools and resources to help all students achieve high academic stands not only base on the traditional lesson ‘talk and chalk’. Furthermore, teacher needs to prepare the slides show like Power Point to make the lesson more interesting and change the perception for all the students especially at rural area. Teachers also have the problem to change the new pedagogy by using ICT.  Besides that, formal training is a must for the teachers as they play on important role to incorporate ICT in education. Thus, learning outcomes cannot be achieve if teacher cannot  attract the students’ attention because the influence of examination oriented culture and the teachers have ‘finish syllabus syndrome’.  In addition, because of heavy workload, teachers have less time or less initiative to adopt new teaching approaches in their lessons. 

The teaching and learning process using ICT applications will be much more interesting and effective compared to the traditional ways. Teachers may use the applications that have been prepared by the government such as the CD-ROM, computers, projector and the internet. Teachers and students may search for more interesting notes and exercise by browsing through the internet. There are lots of materials and notes that are suitable for teaching and learning online. However, they have to be smart in selecting the information in the web pages on the internet because they are some fake information that has been uploaded by the irresponsible people. Besides that, using ICT applications in class does help smoother the teaching and learning process, but without full guidance from teachers, students may use the internet to browse negative web pages. This action may lead to social problems; lessen moral values; wasting time and many other problems. Even worse, these abuses may contribute to cyber crime.

Besides, ICTs can provide new and innovative means to bring educational opportunities to students in rural and remote-rural areas. Even though, in reality we found that there are some problem if we try to brings ICT education in rural area such as not enough facilities, students from low-socio economic background and network problems. But, it is one way to improve academic performance for rural area students. Then, to creating a more effective and more exciting school environment and to change in community’s attitude towards the usage of digital resources to improve result and knowledge acquisition. Usually, this opportunity will focus on to students from remote areas and students with average academic achievements; mainly in English, Science and Mathematics and actively involved in school curriculum.

5.0 CONCLUSION

By conducting this Problem-Based Learning (PBL), it is hoped that the key challenge of all the issues can be identified to school management and the ICT policy maker, so that any ICT program involving collaborative approach can be conducted more successfully in the future.
